The exact origin of the martini cocktail is unclear. The most popular theory suggests it is a descendant of the Martinez Cocktail from sometime in the early 1860s in San Francisco. The first adaptions of the Martini were served with a cherry on top, instead of an olive. One important question is still debated: Shaken or Stirred!
