At The Home Cocktail Club, we scour the web to find well known and unusual cocktail recipes. We then simplify them so that they are easy to make and you can make these cocktails at home. After all, who has all those fancy ingredients that they have in bars…. Ok we might, but we have to taste the recipes before we publish them…
Origins
Well the originates of the very first cocktail are often disputed. Some think it dates back to the 1800’s some think it dates back even further to the 1700’s. Either way they have been around for a very long time.
What is a Cocktail?
A cocktail is an alcoholic drink which is a combination of 1 or more spirits mixed with other ingredients such as fruit juice, flavoured syrup or cream.
There are many different types of cocktails made up of a wide variety of flavours and measurements. Technically a true cocktail follows the simple rule of 3 parts. 2-parts spirit, 1-part sweet or sugar, 1-part sour, bitter, or citrus, this is called the 2:1:1 cocktail formula.
If a recipe only contains a spirit and a mixer (such as Rum & Coke, Gin & Tonic) this is what is called a ‘Highball’.
If a recipe only contains a spirit and a liqueur (such as in a Black Russian) this is called a ‘Duo’, and if a cream mixer is added to this (such as in a White Russian) it is then called a ‘Trio’.
